Hi, I’m Danny.
I’m owner and lead gardener at Root and Soil.
To me, a garden is a place where we can reconnect with the earth and rebalance ourselves in a world that often feels like it has lost its way. My goal at Root and Soil is to enable others in Guernsey to enjoy the same love that I have for gardens, by creating outdoor spaces that last for generations - without causing damage to our planet.
How It All Began
Ever since I was young, growing up in Guernsey, I have always enjoyed being in nature. I feel that it is part of me. I learnt a lot from my grandparents - they grew and exported flowers around the world in a time when Guernsey would glow at night from the light of the glasshouses. I still remember the smell and the feeling of calm that being there gave me.
My journey to this point has made me the person I am today. I studied science and learnt practical skills in engineering, nurtured my creative expression at Art College, and discovered I have an eye for detail through work as a hair stylist and fashion buyer.
Over the past 12 years I have been privileged to work in some of Guernsey’s finest and most unique gardens, working alongside inspiring designers and implementing their designs to the highest of standards. My creative side started to come through and I began to see the world differently.
I started Root and Soil so I could help others enjoy the many benefits of beautiful outdoor spaces in a responsible, environmentally conscious way..
Our Ethos
I started to become concerned about the environmental damage that we, as humans, have caused to the planet. We all have the potential to act and make the world better for our children.
I have developed a unique approach to my work, following regenerative practices for working with nature - not against it. I value honest work and will never use chemicals or environmentally damaging practices. I pride myself in doing things the right way; for my customers, for the gardens I care for, and for the planet.
I feel that it’s important to look to the future and also seek guidance from the past. I value how previous generations worked with the earth and wish to embrace these traditional skills and techniques with a modern and innovative twist. I also believe that our children should get a chance to value the benefits of horticulture, and where our food comes from. I want to share the benefits of getting your hands in the soil and the pleasure that nurturing a garden can have on your soul.
Horticulture should be accessible to all and everyone should have a way to enjoy the beauty of plants. To me, plants can be there as a food source, something to give us purpose, and something to create joy. I’m very much looking forward to nurturing local gardens in Guernsey to create beautiful outdoor spaces that bring people together with one another and the nature that surrounds us.
